SEMESTER TWO
In my second semester, I was fortunate to receive a second placement at Castro Valley High School with with a new teacher - Kara Wilkinson. I happened to be Kara's first student teacher. In addition to working with Kara, halfway through my second semester, I took over as a long-term substitute teacher for Jason Marlis.
I began by supporting Ms. Wilkinson’s virtual U.S. History and Modern World History classes for 10th and 11th grade respectively. In U.S. History, we focused on the Great Depression, the New Deal, America in World War II and the Cold War. During Modern World History we focused on World War II and the Holocaust. We utilized Google Classroom to assign weekly playlists utilizing platforms such as edPuzzle, recorded lectures, Padlet, WebQuests and much more.
With 7 weeks left in the Spring Semester, I took over full time for Mr. Marlis’ World History, Government, and Trojan Time classes. For World History we focused on Russia, China and the Middle East. For Government, we focused on the Judicial and Legislative Branch. Trojan Time is a schoolwide support program that responds to the needs of students. For example, we discussed issues such as Returning to Campus, and Children's Rights and Self-Advocacy. By taking over as a certified substitute teacher, I was able to collaborate with other teachers in the Social Studies Department, counselors, resource teachers and more to develop and implement curriculum in order to support students with varied learning styles and needs in a hybrid classroom environment. Some students attended live classes while others opted to remain remote.
